Capsule moments

Our brain is a fragile part of our body.  It doesn’t like being knocked around.  A study of NFL football players who donated their brain for research after their death found that 99% of the brains were damaged.  In Canada, about 1.5 million people are living with a brain injury of all types.  Concussions are common in the 10-18 age group with 39% who visit ER departments have a concussion. Take care of your children’s brain and your own.

Are you considering medical tourism traveling to another country to get a medical procedure done?  Be sure all medical records are available after the procedure. Ask about follow-up appointments.  Consumer protection laws vary from country to country and may not be the same as in Canada. Check on what immunization is needed for the country you are visiting. And make sure you know the risks of the procedure before going.  And don’t go alone.

Have you heard of the “fortnight diet”? It’s when you diet for two weeks then eat normally for two weeks.  A study compared two groups of obese men.  Calorie-intake of one group was reduced by one-third and they ate this diet for 16 weeks. The second group had the same diet for two weeks then went back to their normal diet for two weeks, alternating for 16 weeks.  The second group lost more weight than the first and gained back less weight after the diet us finished. Interesting!

Left-handedness is found in 10% of men and 8% of women.  At one time,

this trait was looked upon negatively.  In fact, the Latin word for left is sinister.
